ABC = Apple • Butter • Cayenne

Today was really fun!

I got a bushel of apples at the Waverly farmers market yesterday. I bought seconds - and they were only $2.50.

The plan was to make apple sauce - but there were too many apples, so I had to think quickly. A bushel is a lot - about 40 pounds of apples!
Look at how many peels I have!!!

This is the second batch of apples I cooked - Spiced apples with Cayenne pepper!  "D"licious

First I made the Apple Sauce - it is Delicious!

Then I made Apple Butter - but with a kick - I added a 1/4 teaspoon of my dried and ground pepper mix from my garden! along with other tasty ingredients. If you want the recipe - email me.

Then I also decided to make Spiced Apples - and they are really good too.
Lots of Jars of Apple stuff!!

Everything looks like Okra!

I have so much! what do I do?
Well - lets see - I can freeze some - and dry some - Good.
Okra goes into a cookie sheet for freezing.
What ever doesn't fit goes into the dehydrator.
Inside the freezer raw.
This is totally amazing - that sticky gooey stuff that comes out of the Okra made these little hairs come out of the ends when it froze! It is absolutely beautiful. I had to share. When winter comes - the gumbo will be delish!

Figs, Figs, Glorious Figs!

Can any one tell me what type of figs these are? I went foraging in my neighbors trees this morning. The plan is to dehydrate them, and boy are they sweet and yummy.

Here is another shot in direct sunlight - the figs range in size from about 1.5" to 2.5" in diameter.
Here they are soaking in fresh water about 10 minutes after they were picked.
Getting ready to cut them in half for Drying - the racks are right behind the bowl.
This is the actual color!  Magenta People! The first time I cut one open I was so surprised! Not to mention, the taste is so sweet, not tart at all - these are loaded with tons of natural sugar!
Close up
Going into the dehydrator. Yum!

2010 Maryland State Fair

I named my farm (teensie urban garden) in the Spring - the plan was to enter stuff at the fair this year.
Well, I just went to pick up my ribbons on Tuesday. I won 5!

2nd place Red Ribbon  - Pickling Cucumbers over 4"

It was the first time I ever entered anything in the fair. I actually got a Blue Ribbon for my Hot sauce. It is really HOT!

1st place Blue Ribbon - Hot Sauce
2nd place Red Ribbon - Pickled Wax Beans
3rd place White Ribbon  - Strawberry Rhubarb Conserves

2nd place Ribbon - Vegetable oddity (carrot)

It was not my intention to even put this in - but I figured I had it - and look at that I won! woo hoo!

Now I am saving seeds and getting ready for next year.

Check back for more Pics - the Lake Walker Block Party is this weekend.
